Fantasy on themes of the Past (1980) by Walter Buczynski

Toronto is blessed with a breadth and wealth of musical excellence which can be envied internationally. When given the opportunity to record two works involving accordion and string orchestra, the ensemble of choice for Macerollo was The Composers' Orchestra under the baton of Gary Kulesha.

The group's principal mandate is the presentation of new works by emergent Canadian composers as well as lesser known international composers.  Canadian composer Walter Buczynski's Fantasy on Themes of the Past was composed in 1980 for performance in school concerts for young people.  This accounts for the five short movements, each with its own distinctive self-explanatory message:  I) Old Polish Folk Airs; II) Tango; III) Fast Fingers; IV) Waltz; and V) Square Steady Beat.  The work was commissioned by Joseph Macerollo and the Pro Arte Orchestra with the assistance of a grant from the Ontario Arts Council.
